Discussion Prompt: Describe your current knowledge of public health nursing and provide specific examples of public health activities in your community.

Public health nursing refers to the promotion and protection of the community or population's health using wide knowledge in public health, social, medicine, and nursing sciences. My understanding of public health nursing is that it is a systematic approach comprising of five core steps;

a.       Assessing the health and needs of the population to establish the families and people that will reap from the health promotion activities and those at risk of injuries, illnesses, mortality, and morbidity.

b.      Development of an intervention plan to meet the community needs and considering the importance of the different resources and activities that promote the individuals’ health needs and preventing injuries among other health-related challenges.

c.       Effective, efficient, and equitable implementation of the management plan.

d.      Monitoring the individual and community progress to ensure that the developed intervention has positively impacted the person’s health and that of the population.

e.       Using the monitoring and evaluation insights to influence changes in the healthcare delivery and deploying healthcare resources. This also involves policy developments at the local, regional, and global levels to promote health and prevent illnesses.

According to the American Public Health Association, the systematic strategy described above is centred and aligned with the following aspects.

i.                    The strengths, preferences, and needs of the community.

ii.                  Present scientific knowledge.

iii.                Availability of resources.

iv.                Accepted standards and criteria of healthcare and nursing practice.

v.                  Objectives, goals, and philosophy of an agency.

vi.                Collaboration and participation of the community in achieving the healthcare needs.

In Florida, the roles of public health nurses are vast, including family planning, immunizations, promoting women’s health, conducting surveillance, and ensuring access to public health services. The school-centred clinics play a crucial role managing the daily needs and conducting screenings. Public health in Florida is also involved in investigating diseases and prevention to ensure the safety of the community and protecting vulnerable groups (Florida Health, 2020). Notably, all the 67 health departments in the county of Florida play an essential role in providing these services.
